Rothesay St, Brighton

Project Summary
  • Privately owned
  • Two sisters
  • Two townhouse development
  • Corner site in Brighton

Design Objectives
  • Create two separate homes for each of the sisters families
  • Original brief was to be a very European design with arches
  • In lieu of this not likely to be supported by council, a contemporary design was achieved for each townhouse
  • Natural finishes to be used balanced with a generous use of stained timber and glass

Project Challenges
  • The first floor living spaces had to be larger than the ground floor to meet the design and council space requirements.
  • To combat this, we introduced cantilevers into the external form

Lifestyle Outcomes
  • Both townhouses are open plan and ideal for entertaining a large extended family
  • The upstairs rooms face the canopy of trees on the main street creating an affect of ‘living amongst the trees’
  • Both townhouses have a sense of privacy – with high fences and private courtyards
