Saxby Road, Glen Iris

Project Summary
  • Privately owned.
  • North facing, post war solid brick house on a sloping block of land.
  • Client wanted a larger family room with kitchen, plus a bedroom, more space for bath room and laundry and new rear deck cut into the land.
  • They wanted a renovation that would be a cut above the usual suburban approach.

Design Objectives
  • 1960s modern to the rear and post-war to the front.
  • Design approach was contemporary in look and simple in construction.
  • Main feature was a large glazed interface between indoors and outdoors with a generous shaded north overhang.

Project Challenges
  • Neighbours had put in extensions that cut into rear space that diminished the aesthetic of the view.
  • To eliminate the view of any existing house or roof form from the back yard, so the house would be period from the front and contemporary from the rear with no visual mismatch.

Lifestyle Outcomes
  • Our client loves the amount of glazing, as it allows views into the garden from anywhere in the new rear living areas which will now be the hub of the house.
  • This new addition has breathed life into the rear of this home and created a great focus around the rear living area to the paved deck, along with a sense of separation from the front and rear rooms.
