Nirvana Avenue, Malvern East

Project Summary

  •    Privately owned.
  •    Renovation to rendered brick Californian bungalow.

Design Objectives
  • Retain the existing rendered brick Californian bungalow features to the front four rooms of the home.
  • Link with a large open plan contemporary living space.
  • Maintain and refurbish all the period features.
  • Living, meals and kitchen areas to focus around a north east facing outdoor deck.
  • Keep the massive lilly pilly tree in the centre of the backyard which provided shelter from the sun and and opportunity for outdoor uplighting.

Project Challenges
  • To create voluminous light filled spaces using large areas of glass,  that integrated indoor and outdoor living but also met the five star  energy rating requirements.
  • This was achieved by using a four metre high clerestorey roof.

Lifestyle Outcomes
  • Fitted cabinetry has allowed many household items to be stored away from site.
  • Large area to back was opened up with large bifold doors, spilling out onto back deck works well for regular summer barbeques.
  • A contemporary ensuite was added to the main bedroom to separate from the other bathroom area for the children.
  • The sitting room is used for reading in the sun – the bifold doors opening up onto the deck.
