Ross Street, Toorak

Project Summary
  • Commission from a renowned builder-developer after seeing our work on nearby projects.
  • High-end speculative project.
  • Contemporary family home built on a narrow site, which is only a stones throw from the busy cosmopolitan Toorak Village.
  • Our rigorous commitment to the design process, our ability to overcome unique challenges and close collaboration with consultants and contractors alike, led to this project being awarded ‘Victorian Home of the Year’.

Design Objectives
  • Replace the existing quaint single level Victorian weatherboard residence, with a bold two-storey contemporary-designed home of over 400mSQ.
  • Our client wanted this house to ‘make a real design statement’.
  • A home that would suit a young professional family.
  • Clean lines and elegant minimalism.

Project Challenges
  • Narrow site with high flanking adjoining walls presented challenges in ensuring that adequate light could stream through into all rooms.
  • To push both design and town planning envelopes.
  • To engage tradesmen who were more like craftsmen with outstanding design expertise.

Lifestyle Outcomes
  • This project created a designer lifestyle home with a focus on entertaining.
  • Family members can chose to spend time in either formal or informal living rooms on the ground floor or go outdoors to the west facing rear courtyard.
  • After socialising they can go upstairs through the central staircase and light-well, to use the office or retire to any of the 3 generous bedrooms.
  • 3m and 3.5m ceilings created a sense of space.
  • The extensive use of windows and skylights evokes a feeling of light – and constant views of the sky.
